Mater Dei (Calif.) is the national champion for high school football this year. It has gone wire-to-wire in the No. 1 spot and defeated five ranked opponents. The nod gives the Monarchs its fifth overall Super 25 crown since 1982, ties the school with De La Salle (Concord, Calif.). Mater Dei outscored its competition this season by an average of 40.1 to 14.4. 

The Monarchs, who are 14-0, have been ranked No. 1 for all but one week this season, the only blemish coming in a Week 4 loss to Long Beach Poly (Calif.) in the Los Angeles City Section playoffs. The Monarchs came back from that loss to beat Long Beach Poly in the CIF State Open Division semifinals before beating St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) 21-14 in the title game Saturday night at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., to claim its first state championship since 2000 and first Super 25 title since 2002.

South Carolina Gamecocks

South Carolina is already excited about Shane Beamer's second year on campus. They added two more reasons to yourohmizng about this team with his head coach, Tanner Bailey. If Gamecocks' offense is more explosive this fall, it could certainly translate to eight-plus wins. It should provide you with more hope for a positive second year. Free from worry of what will happen in 2022, they can wait for Austin Stogner or Shane Beamer to make an appearance instead.

Iowa Hawkeyes

Kirk Ferentz is an excellent college football coach and there’s not a single doubt Iowa’s defense will play at a high level next season. But the Hawkeyes’ offense was atrocious this past season, ranking outside the top 100 in nearly every category. With two key starters on the offensive line gone, we’re not betting on Iowa to win 10 games.

Kentucky Wildcats

Mark Stoops should be excited for potential growth from quarterback Will Levis. If he elevates his game and Chris Rodriguez Jr. delivers another 1,000-yard season, Stoops’ team can finish with nine wins in 2022.

Tennessee Volunteers

The Tennessee Volunteers entered the 2021 season with expectations. However, Josh Heupel’s offense became a bright spot and quarterback Hendon Hooker (36 total touchdowns) emerged as one of the SEC”s best quarterbacks. If the Tennessee Defense improves, the Vols could finish the season in the top-15 of college football rankings.

NC State Wolfpack

The Wolfpack's loss of Ikem Ekwonu and several other contributors on the offensive line is likely to lead to a five-win season with a 6-2 record, but their quarterback play, coaching and returning defensive starters are all likely to make them a top-25 team.

Houston Cougars

Clayton Tune and Alton McCaskill will take on Houston's offense in the 2020 season. It is great news for a team that averaged nearly 36 points per game during the regular season. The returning starters will help Dana Holgorsen try to take down Cincinnati.

Wisconsin Badgers

The Badgers will need a legitimate starting quarterback to be successful next season. We will be looking for 8-9 wins, and the defense will have to click if it is going to make it that far. Braelon Allen is the Heisman candidate to watch, and the teenager could become the latest Wisconsin running back to rush for 2,000 yards in a season. It’s great news that they hired Caleb Williams instead of trying new ground seller,ailen.

Cincinnati Bearcats

The Bearcats are poised to take a step back in 2022. Desmond Ridder, Jerome Ford, and Ahmad Gardner are all NFL-bound. while Luke Fickell is an excellent coach, the depletion in Cincinnati’s talent makes an undefeated season unlikely. The Bearcats will still be the AAC champs, but the playoff appearance was a one-year moment.

Ole Miss Rebels

It’s hard to keep up with the Jones family when they start making such big changes. However, he has uppery kept their lifts and this will be a challenging situation for them. Jaxson Dart is an excellent college football tight end who will need to help out his great deep threat. The biggest question is whether or not he can stay on the field in the pro game.

Sam Pittman took over a program that won four total games in two seasons under Chad Morris. In 2021, the Razorbacks went 9-4 with Pittman at the helm. Losses in the front seven are concerning, but the arrival of receiver Jadon Haselwood from the portal shows top talent wants to play for Pittman. The Arkansas schedule will be tougher in 2022 (Cincinnati, BYU), but this is a team on the rise.

Oklahoma State Cowboys

Many are optimistic about Oklahoma State in 2022 and for good reason. Spencer Sanders is returning along with a majority of the starts on offense. It’s great news for Mike Gundy, who continues to prove he can win even without pulling in top recruits. But losing Jim Knowles, responsible for overhauling the Cowboys’ defense, gives us enough doubt to push Oklahoma State down the pre-summer college football rankings a bit.
